Chemical Analysis:İ Styrene Monomer content in polystyrene

Procedure:İ Analysis of the sample was performed in accordance with the Food and Drug Administration Regulations for determining the presence and amount of styrene monomer from polystyrene, 21 CFR 177.1640

Samples were dissolved in methylene chloride, and the resulting solution analyzed for presence and quantity of styrene monomer via Gas Chromatograph.

Requirements:İ Styrene monomer is not to exceed 1.0% (w/w), or 0.5% (w/w) in cases as noted in the table below.

EEC 90/128

Limit: 10 mg/dm¾ (general requirement)

60 mg/kg for containers which can be filled, with a capacity of not less than 500ml and not more than 10L.

Procedure: The test samples are submersed in the appropriate food simulating solvents, at a temperature of 40†C for 10 days. They are then removed from the solvents, and the extracted residue is weighed. Results as expressed in mg/dm¾.
